Wilmington NC

Our new home base.

When I found out that my parents were going to be moving to Wilmington, I was ecstatic. I have always enjoyed traveling “home” to new places but over the past few years, I have found myself craving a place to call home that will not change. I truly could not have asked for a better place to be our new home base.

Although I had never been before, I had heard that Wilmington is the perfect beach town. I have been a few times now and I can say that Wilmington has exceeded my expectations. The surrounding beach area is much bigger than I had expected. Outside of downtown Wilmington, there are three separate beaches you can go to. I love that each beach has it’s own vibe and separate things to do.

Beach Days are the best days.

Beaches

Kure Beach – As of now, my parents are renting a place near this beach. Kure Beach is so beautiful and much quieter than Wrightsville and Carolina Beach. The beach offers free parking, a few restaurants and a fishing pier. They have the best coffee shop that I highly recommend checking out if you go. Happy Hippies Java Hut is the coolest, quirkiest little place. They have their own patented cold brew called “mermaid magic” and it really is magic. Trust me. It has milk (you can also select non-dairy options) and their flavoring already mixed in.

Wrightsville – Known for the surfing and water sport beach. When you walk around the surrounding area, you can see the relaxed, surfer vibes. This beach is always bustling.

Carolina Beach – Very family-friendly. They have a tiny boardwalk area with local shops and restaurants. Vibrant place to have lunch during the day or drinks at night.

To Do’s

Fort Fisher – Kure beach is the closest beach to the historic Fort Fisher. Fort Fisher was built in 1861 during the Civil War. It is located at the southern most tip of the county. It has a beautiful view of the shoreline, scenic beaches, trails and the state aquarium. This is the absolute best place to watch the sunset in this area. I highly recommend driving down 20-30 minutes before sunset with a bottle of wine.

Ferry to Southport – Southport is a quiet little town with southern charm. It is the perfect day trip if you are looking to switch things up a bit. You can easily take the ferry to Southport during the day and be back in time to watch the sunset at Fort Fisher. The ferry costs $7 and takes about 30 minutes. There are plenty of local boutiques to shop at and restaurants steps from the waterfront. We ate lunch at Oliver’s on Cape Fear. They had awesome seafood and a beautiful view of the water. My family also recommends Moore Street Oyster.

The Foods

Ceviche – Colorful, vibrant seafood restaurant with creative cocktails. This is the place I would want to go to when on a beach vacation. We loved everything we ordered!

The Bridge Tender – Seafood restaurant near Wrightsville beach. This restaurant is directly on the water and has a great view. Delicious seafood and drinks. The crab dip is some of the best I have had!

IndoChin – Thai and Asian fusion restaurant. This is my family’s go-to place for our Asian fix. Great outdoor atmosphere. Really good appetizers and curry dishes.

Jonny Lukes – Great well-rounded menu. Their menu ranges from seafood to sirloin. A lot of classic dishes. Good atmosphere and drinks!

Wrightsville Beach Brewery – Delicious beer and food! Good outdoor seating and wide range of beers. They also have daily oyster specials! Mad Mole Brewing is also one of my favorite breweries but they do not serve food.

Boombalatti’s – Wow, I love this ice cream place. Fresh, homemade ice cream and creative menu options! We love their coffee floats and shakes. My favorite flavors are Mocha Oreo and Banana & Nilla Wafers

What’s next on my list?

Sharkbar, Rum Cow, Cape Fear Seafood Company

There are so many restaurants I am trying to get to. Stay tuned for more!
